Field Note Friday, Edition 004: Hydrangeas Belong To Everyone

Cape Cod can be a little show-offy in the summertime.

And we love it for that.

One of the main shows are the blooms of hydrangeas that bloom in late June and hold on for as much of the summer as they can. Whites, pinks, purples, blues explode, giving us a display to rival the 4th of July fireworks, colors depending on the soil, depending on where you are, depending on what the land decides to give you that year. They spill over fences and line driveways like they’ve always been there. Like they belong to everyone and no one at the same time.

While not native to Cape Cod, no other flowering shrub seems to be as universally understood as "Cape Cod."

You see them all over, and you know. We made it through the gray, dull winter, and we have been rewarded with beauty in the flowers. Summer is here, and we have arrived, together.

Beauty and community can be found everywhere, if only we take the time to slow down to look.
