Field Note Friday, Edition 006: Every Old Screen Door Has Its Own Sound
Share
Every old screen door has its own sound.
You know the one. I am certain we all have our own memories of screen doors opening and closing.
The little squeak when you push it open. The bang when it swings shut behind you. The way you could hear someone coming before you ever saw them, and if you paid close enough attention, you could tell exactly who it was by the sounds the screen door made welcoming them home.
It’s such a small thing, but somehow that sound feels like summer.
Bare feet on the porch and tracking in sand. Running in and out all day. A popsicle melting faster than you could eat it. Someone reminding you for the millionth time to stop slamming the door.
I feel like we don’t have as many sounds like that anymore. Everything is quieter, smoother, and more convenient.
But I kind of miss the things that announced themselves.
The things that showed signs of being loved and used.
Anyway… today’s field note: pay attention to the little things. They’re usually carrying more memories than we realize. ✨
See you somewhere in the tides,
Stephanie
